How To Test the Cooling System

Test the cooling system while the engine is cool, and make sure that the vehicle is parked in a dry location where you can identify the location of any leaks. If fluid levels in the cooling system are low,carefully top off the reservoir with water for the test.

Squeeze the upper radiator hose to check pressure levels before removing the radiator cap. Exercise caution when removing the cap if the system is pressurized. Depending on the design of the radiator in your vehicle, a pressure tester may connect directly to the top of the radiator or coolant reservoir. lf this is not possible, use an adapter.

Attach the spring-loaded pressure tester by pressing down and twisting the connector clockwise to lock. Pump the plunger to produce pressure. The needle on the tester gauge should rise with the pressure inside the system. As pressure increases, the engine, radiator or hoses may leak coolant.

Pump the plunger until the system indicates 14 pounds of pressure. Do not add more than 18 pounds of pressure to the cooling system. If it is impossible to maintain pressure levels, a coolant leak should be apparent.

Remove the pressure tester from the radiator or coolant reservoir by twisting the tool counterclockwise. Allow pressure to release before removing the tool, which may release coolant or water. Clean the tool and store the cooling system test kit in a cool, dry place.
